Best Business Credit Cards in Australia (2026): Which One Actually Makes Sense for Your Business?

Australian business owners collectively spend billions on credit cards each year, yet most choose their business card based on whatever their bank offered when they opened a business account. That is almost always a mistake. The difference between the right card and the wrong one can be worth $5,000 to $15,000 per year in rewards, cash back, or avoided fees, depending on your spend volume.

This guide compares the best business credit cards available in Australia in 2026, explains which card suits different spending patterns, and covers the fintech alternatives that are increasingly competitive for SMEs doing international payments.

*Note, at the time of writing these details were correct, however please note fees, points and terms change frequently. Please do your own thorough research to see what is best for your business. Also make sure to clearly understand all fees & interest that these cards can incur on your business.

What to Look for in a Business Credit Card

Before comparing individual cards, understand the six features that actually matter for an Australian SME.

Reward structure and earn rate. Cards earn either frequent flyer points (Qantas or Velocity), bank rewards points (transferable to multiple partners), or cash back. The earn rate per dollar spent is the most important number. Anything above 1 point per dollar on general spend is competitive. Below 0.75 points per dollar, the card is not working hard enough for you.

Annual fee vs reward value. A $395 annual fee sounds expensive until you realise you are earning 1.5 points per dollar on $100,000 in annual spend, generating 150,000 points worth $2,000 to $3,000 in flights or transfers. The fee-to-value ratio is what matters, not the fee in isolation.

Interest-free days. Most business cards offer 44 to 55 interest-free days on purchases. This is effectively a free cash flow loan. If you spend $20,000 in month one and pay in full at the end of the interest-free period, you have had use of that $20,000 for nearly two months at zero cost. For businesses managing tight cash cycles, this is a genuine working capital tool.

Foreign transaction fees. Standard bank cards charge 2 to 3 per cent on international transactions. If your business spends $50,000 per year on international suppliers, software, or travel, that is $1,000 to $1,500 in hidden fees. Some cards and fintech alternatives eliminate this entirely.

Employee cards and spending controls. If you have staff making purchases, you need the ability to issue employee cards with individual spending limits, real-time notifications, and the ability to freeze cards instantly. Premium cards from Amex and fintech providers generally offer better controls than big four bank cards.

Accounting software integration. Automatic bank feeds into Xero or MYOB save hours of reconciliation time each month. Most major card providers support Xero feeds, but some fintech cards require manual CSV import, which defeats the purpose.

The Best Business Credit Cards in 2026

American Express Business Gold Plus Card

Annual fee: $395 (two employee cards included free, then $75 per card per year)

Earn rate: Up to 1.5 Membership Rewards points per dollar on eligible everyday spend, 3 points per dollar on Xero, Google Ads, Meta, AWS, and Dell

Current sign-up bonus: 200,000 bonus Membership Rewards points when you spend $5,000 in the first 3 months (apply by 25 August 2026, new Amex members only)

Best for: SMEs that spend on digital advertising, software, and cloud services. The 3x earn rate on Xero, Google Ads, Meta, and AWS is unique to this card and extremely valuable if those are significant line items for you. The $650 annual credit with participating B2B merchants adds further value.

Watch out for: Amex is not accepted everywhere. Some suppliers, particularly trades and smaller businesses, do not take it. If more than 30 per cent of your supplier payments cannot go on Amex, you will need a Visa or Mastercard as well.

American Express Qantas Business Rewards Card

Annual fee: $450 (charge card, balance due in full each month)

Earn rate: 1.25 Qantas Points per dollar on eligible everyday business spend, 2 Qantas Points per dollar on Qantas products, 0.5 points per dollar on government and ATO payments

Current sign-up bonus: 170,000 bonus Qantas Points when you spend $6,000 in the first 3 months (apply by 16 June 2026, new Amex members only)

Best for: Business owners who fly regularly on Qantas or partner airlines. The ability to earn points on ATO payments (at a reduced rate) is useful for businesses with significant BAS or PAYG obligations. Points go into your Qantas Business Rewards account and can be transferred to any Qantas Frequent Flyer account.

Watch out for: This is a charge card, not a credit card. You must pay the balance in full each month. No interest-free revolving credit. If cash flow flexibility is your priority, this is not the right card.

American Express Platinum Business Card

Annual fee: $1,750 (up to 99 employee cards at no additional cost)

Earn rate: 2.25 Membership Rewards points per dollar on eligible purchases, 1 point per dollar on government and ATO spend

Current sign-up bonus: 350,000 bonus Membership Rewards points when you spend $12,000 in the first 3 months (apply by 14 July 2026, new Amex members only)

Best for: High-spending businesses ($150,000+ per year on card) that want premium travel benefits. Includes access to over 1,400 airport lounges worldwide, complimentary hotel loyalty status (Marriott Gold, Hilton Gold), and comprehensive travel insurance. The 350,000 point sign-up bonus is one of the largest available in Australia.

Watch out for: The $1,750 annual fee requires significant spend to justify. At 2.25 points per dollar, you need roughly $100,000 in annual card spend just to break even on the fee at standard point valuations. Only worth it for genuinely high-spending businesses.

NAB Business Signature Card

Annual fee: $295

Earn rate: 1 Qantas Point per $1.50 spent on eligible everyday business purchases (including ATO payments), capped at $50,000 per card per statement period

Current sign-up bonus: 150,000 bonus Qantas Points when you spend $10,000 in the first 90 days

Best for: Businesses that prefer dealing with a major bank rather than Amex, and want Qantas Points. The NAB relationship means easier integration with existing NAB business banking, and Visa acceptance is universal.

Watch out for: The earn rate of 1 point per $1.50 (effectively 0.67 points per dollar) is significantly lower than the Amex Qantas card's 1.25 points per dollar. You earn roughly half the points for the same spend.

Westpac Altitude Business Platinum

Annual fee: $250

Earn rate: 2 Altitude Rewards points per dollar on eligible purchases (transferable to Qantas, Velocity, and other partners)

Current sign-up bonus: Up to 150,000 Altitude Rewards bonus points when you spend $6,000 in the first 60 days (apply between 28 January and 30 April 2026)

Best for: Businesses that want flexibility to transfer points to multiple frequent flyer programs (not locked into Qantas or Velocity). The $250 annual fee is reasonable for the earn rate.

Watch out for: Transfer rates to partner programs are not 1:1. The value of Altitude points depends heavily on which partner you transfer to. Transferring to Velocity is typically better value than transferring to Qantas from this program.

ANZ Business Black Card

Annual fee: $300

Earn rate: Varies by program (ANZ Rewards or Qantas Points). Generally competitive for a Visa card.

Best for: Existing ANZ business banking customers who want a premium business card integrated with their banking relationship. Includes complimentary insurance and airport lounge access.

Watch out for: The rewards program is less generous than Amex equivalents, which is typical for Visa-based business cards in Australia.

Fintech Alternatives: Business Debit and Charge Cards

For businesses that do not want revolving credit or that make significant international payments, fintech cards are increasingly competitive.

Airwallex Business Card

Annual fee: Depends on plan (free on some tiers)

FX fees: No foreign transaction fees when spending in held currencies. Competitive FX margins on conversion.

Best for: Businesses paying international suppliers, SaaS subscriptions in USD/GBP/EUR, or operating across multiple currencies. The multi-currency wallet means you can hold funds in foreign currencies and spend without conversion fees.

Watch out for: No rewards points. This is a debit/prepaid card, not a credit card. No interest-free days or revolving credit facility.

Wise Business Card

Annual fee: No ongoing card fee (small issuance fee)

FX fees: Mid-market exchange rate with a transparent fee (typically 0.4 to 1.5 per cent depending on currency)

Best for: Similar use case to Airwallex. Particularly strong for businesses making frequent small international payments. The transparent pricing model makes it easy to calculate costs.

Watch out for: Debit card only. No credit facility. Limited acceptance in some countries compared to Visa credit cards. Xero integration is available but may require manual matching for some transaction types.

Tyro EFTPOS and Business Card

Best for: Hospitality, retail, and trades businesses that want their payment terminal and business card from the same provider. Tyro's bank feeds integrate cleanly with Xero.

Watch out for: Limited rewards compared to Amex or major bank cards. Best viewed as a convenience and integration play rather than a rewards optimisation play.

Which Card Is Right for Your Business?

High domestic spend, want maximum points: Amex Business Gold Plus (if you spend on Xero, Google Ads, Meta) or Amex Qantas Business Rewards (if you want Qantas Points)

High international spend: Airwallex or Wise Business for near-zero FX fees, paired with a domestic rewards card for Australian spend

Want Visa/Mastercard acceptance everywhere: NAB Business Signature or Westpac Altitude Business Platinum

Low annual spend (under $50,000/year): The annual fee on premium cards will not be justified. Consider a no-fee or low-fee card, or a fintech debit card

Need employee cards with strong controls: Amex (up to 99 employee cards on Platinum) or Airwallex (virtual cards with instant controls)

How Your Card Choice Affects Your Books

The practical impact of your card choice on bookkeeping is often overlooked.

Xero bank feeds. Most major bank and Amex cards support automatic Xero feeds. This means transactions appear in Xero daily for reconciliation without manual entry. If your card does not support Xero feeds, you are creating unnecessary manual work. Check before you apply.

Separate business and personal spending. The ATO expects business expenses to be clearly separated from personal expenses. Using a dedicated business credit card is the simplest way to achieve this. Mixing business and personal transactions on a single card creates reconciliation headaches and increases the risk of incorrect GST claims.

Cash flow forecasting. A credit card with 55 interest-free days effectively extends your payment terms on every purchase by nearly two months. Factor this into your cash flow forecasting. If you are currently paying suppliers on 14-day terms by bank transfer, switching to a business credit card for eligible suppliers extends your effective terms to 55+ days.

Points earned on business expenses. The ATO's position on loyalty points earned through business credit card use is that they are generally not assessable income for the business, provided they are incidental to the business expenditure. However, if points are converted to cash or used in a way that constitutes a fringe benefit for an employee, different rules may apply. Talk to your tax agent about your specific circumstances.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I earn frequent flyer points on ATO payments?

Yes, some cards (notably Amex Qantas Business Rewards and NAB Business Signature) earn points on ATO and government payments, though typically at a reduced rate (0.5 to 0.67 points per dollar). Given that BAS, PAYG, and super payments can be substantial, this adds up.

Should I get an Amex or a Visa/Mastercard?

Ideally both. Use an Amex for maximum rewards on purchases where it is accepted, and a Visa or Mastercard for suppliers that do not take Amex. Many businesses run this dual-card strategy.

Are business credit card annual fees tax-deductible?

Annual fees on a business credit card used exclusively for business purposes are generally deductible as a business expense. Your tax agent can confirm this for your specific situation.

What is the difference between a charge card and a credit card?

A charge card (like the Amex Qantas Business Rewards) requires you to pay the balance in full each month. A credit card allows you to revolve a balance and pay interest. Charge cards offer no interest-free revolving credit but also no risk of accumulating high-interest debt.

Can I use a personal credit card for business expenses?

You can, but it complicates your bookkeeping and makes GST claims harder to substantiate. A dedicated business card is strongly recommended for any business processing more than $5,000 per month in expenses.

How do I compare the real value of different rewards programs?

The most common valuation method is cents per point. Qantas Points are generally valued at 1.5 to 2 cents per point when redeemed for flights (less for gift cards). Amex Membership Rewards are typically valued at 0.7 to 1 cent per point when transferred to airline partners. Multiply your expected annual points earn by the cents-per-point value and compare to the annual fee.

Do fintech cards like Airwallex integrate with Xero?

Airwallex does offer Xero integration, though the depth of integration varies. Check whether automatic bank feeds are supported or whether you need to import CSV files manually.

What happens if an employee misuses a business credit card?

Most business cards allow you to set individual spending limits per employee card, restrict merchant categories, and receive real-time transaction alerts. Having clear internal policies on card use and requiring receipts for all transactions is essential regardless of the card provider.

Before You Close This Article

Check what you are currently paying in annual fees and foreign transaction fees on your existing business card. Then calculate how many points (or how much cash back) you earned last year. If the fees exceed the value of the rewards, you are losing money on your card and should switch. If you do not know the answer, your bookkeeper or finance team should be tracking this.
