Adelaide has a strong local bookkeeping market, from sole-practitioner Xero specialists to firms that handle payroll, BAS and reporting for growing businesses. The right choice depends less on who is "best" and more on what you need. That might be BAS-ready books, payroll for an award-covered team, or a finance function that reports monthly. This guide compares seven providers serving Adelaide businesses, including Scale Suite, against the same criteria. It is not a ranking.

Published: October 2026

Details checked: 11 October 2026, against each provider's own website

Disclosure: Scale Suite publishes this guide and is one of the providers listed. We have no commercial relationship with the other providers. They are listed in no particular order after Scale Suite, and we have not stated their prices. Provider details change, so confirm them directly with each provider.

Provider Notes

Scale Suite

Scale Suite provides embedded finance teams for Australian SMEs:

  • Weekly bookkeeping
  • Payroll
  • BAS and IAS lodgement
  • Cashflow reporting
  • Management accounts

One team delivers all of it, with Chartered Accountant review, as a registered BAS Agent. Packages start from $1,500 per month, with no lock-in and a 30-day money-back guarantee. Scale Suite is based in Sydney and serves Adelaide clients remotely, using cloud software and video meetings. A very small business that only needs quarterly BAS preparation will usually find a local sole practitioner more economical. See Adelaide bookkeeping services.

Integral Bookkeeping Solutions

Integral Bookkeeping Solutions is based on Glen Osmond Road, Myrtle Bank, and describes itself as one of the longer-established Adelaide bookkeeping firms. It is a Xero Gold Partner, and its Xero listing shows Xero migration specialisation. Its services go beyond bookkeeping to budgeting, job reporting and virtual CFO support.

  • Services listed on its website: bookkeeping, BAS services, payroll, internal financial reporting, advisory and training, and budgeting
  • Software: an accredited Xero team based in South Australia, Advanced Certified QuickBooks Online bookkeepers, and accreditation in MYOB AccountRight and Essentials
  • Add-ons it supports: including Deputy, Float, Hubdoc, Dext, Stripe, Tyro, Tradify, LEAP and Lightspeed
  • Availability: as at 11 October 2026, its website said it was fully booked and not taking new clients for the rest of the 2026 calendar year

May suit: an established business on Xero, QuickBooks Online or MYOB that wants reporting and budgeting as well as bookkeeping, and can wait until 2027 to start.

Scorpion Bookkeeping

Scorpion Bookkeeping is based in Walkerville and is a registered BAS Agent. It offers ongoing bookkeeping, payroll (including STP and super) and BAS Agent services covering IAS and TPAR. It describes itself as a Xero-only specialist, works with businesses locally and Australia-wide, and has industry pages for trades, hospitality, entertainment and healthcare.

  • Industries named on its website: trades such as builders, electricians and plumbers; entertainment and creative businesses; cafés, restaurants and venues; and NDIS providers, medical practices and aged care
  • Scope note: its website says it is a registered BAS Agent, not a tax agent, and does not prepare or lodge income tax returns, so you will still need an accountant for those

May suit: a business already on Xero in one of those industries that wants payroll and BAS handled locally.

Bookkeepers On Call

Bookkeepers On Call is based in Myrtle Bank and supports small businesses in Adelaide, regional areas and elsewhere in Australia. Its services include bookkeeping, invoicing, reconciliations, payroll and BAS preparation. Its team is certified in Xero, QuickBooks Online, MYOB and Hubdoc.

  • Team: its website says its leadership team is based in Adelaide
  • Other services: budgeting and business planning support, and an online bookkeeping needs analysis for quotes
  • Out of scope: its website says it does not manage self-managed super funds
  • Availability: as at 11 October 2026, its website said it was fully booked and not taking new clients for the rest of the 2026 calendar year

May suit: a small business on MYOB, QuickBooks Online or Xero that wants a local team, once it reopens to new clients.

AQ Bookkeeping

AQ Bookkeeping lists an office in Waymouth Street, Adelaide. It offers partial or full bookkeeping, payroll, BAS and IAS, and Xero training as certified Xero trainers. It works with Xero, MYOB and QuickBooks Online.

  • Services listed on its website: invoicing and purchases, payroll, bank reconciliations, financial reporting, BAS, IAS, superannuation, TPAR and end of financial year preparation
  • Other options: support for owners who do their own bookkeeping, catch-up work for businesses that have fallen behind, and start-up set-up help
  • Experience: its website says its team is backed by over 15 years of experience

May suit: a small business that wants to keep some bookkeeping in-house with professional review, or needs to catch up on overdue BAS.

Bookkeeping N More

Bookkeeping N More is based in Kanmantoo in the Adelaide Hills. It provides bookkeeping, BAS services, Xero setup and migration, and Xero health checks. Its team describes themselves as Certified Xero Partners.

  • Bookkeeping packages: accounts payable and receivable, bank reconciliations, payroll, PAYG, super and WorkCover, and Single Touch Payroll
  • Xero set-up: covers bank feeds, chart of accounts, bank rules, payroll set-up and conversion from an existing file, with training and 30 days of support
  • Document capture: it uses Hubdoc to collect receipts and bills

May suit: an Adelaide Hills or regional business moving to Xero, or one that wants its existing Xero file checked.

Functional Business Solutions

Functional Business Solutions was founded in Adelaide in 2010 and now lists its office in Leigh Street in the CBD. It delivers bookkeeping, payroll and admin services remotely. It is accredited with the Tax Practitioners Board as a BAS Agent and is a member of the Institute of Certified Bookkeepers and the Australian Bookkeepers Network.

  • Clients: its website says it works with small and medium businesses anywhere in Australia
  • Other services: business consulting and training on accounting software for in-house staff
  • Software: its client area links to Xero, MYOB, QuickBooks and Hubdoc

May suit: an owner-operated business that wants bookkeeping, payroll and admin from one remote team, plus training for its own staff.

What Does Bookkeeping Cost in Adelaide?

Adelaide bookkeepers use the same pricing models as the rest of Australia:

  • Hourly: suits very small or irregular needs, but costs are harder to predict.
  • Fixed monthly packages: predictable cost for a defined scope.
  • Embedded finance teams: bookkeeping, payroll and reporting together, priced monthly.

Hypothetical example: hourly or fixed?

Assumptions: a business needs 8 hours of bookkeeping in a normal month and 20 hours in each of the 4 months when a quarterly BAS is prepared. The $90 hourly rate and the $1,100 fixed fee are illustrative only, not any provider's price.

  • Hours a year: (8 × 8) + (20 × 4) = 64 + 80 = 144 hours
  • Hourly: 144 × $90 = $12,960 a year, with monthly bills from $720 to $1,800
  • Fixed: $1,100 × 12 = $13,200 a year, the same every month

The totals are close. The difference is predictability, and what happens in a month that needs more work. Ask how out-of-scope work is billed under a fixed fee.

Costs that sit outside the quote

  • Catch-up or clean-up work before the regular service starts
  • Software subscriptions (Xero, payroll, receipt capture and add-ons)
  • Year-end work for your accountant, and income tax returns, which a BAS agent can't lodge
  • Extra payroll for new starters, terminations or award changes
  • Ad hoc reports for lenders or investors

We have not stated other providers' prices. For national price ranges, see how much do bookkeepers charge in Australia, or use the bookkeeping cost estimator. Whatever the model, check that the scope, turnaround times and reporting are written down.

‍

How to Choose an Adelaide Bookkeeper

1. Match the provider to your size

A sole practitioner can suit a simple business. A business with 15 award-covered staff, several bank accounts and a lender asking for monthly reports usually needs more capacity and cover.

2. Check BAS Agent registration

Rule: Anyone who prepares or lodges your BAS for a fee must be a registered BAS agent or tax agent.

Your action: Search the provider on the Tax Practitioners Board public register.

3. Ask about payroll and awards

If your staff are award-covered, ask who interprets the award and who is responsible if a rate is wrong.

4. Ask what happens when someone is sick or leaves

Single-person providers carry key-person risk, so ask how cover works.

5. Ask what reporting you will get

At minimum, a monthly profit and loss and balance sheet. Ask when they arrive and what they include.

6. Ask about switching

A good provider will manage the handover from your current bookkeeper. See how to switch bookkeepers without disruption.

‍

Remote or Local?

Most bookkeeping now runs on cloud software, so a provider doesn't have to be in Adelaide to do the work. The trade-offs:

  • Local can suit businesses that want face-to-face meetings, on-site help with paperwork, or a bookkeeper who knows local suppliers and industries.
  • Remote widens the choice of provider and capacity. It works best when documents are already digital and bank feeds, receipt capture and payroll are in the cloud.
  • Either way, ask how you will communicate, how quickly questions are answered, and who your day-to-day contact is.

‍

Selection Criteria: A Simple Scorecard

Score each shortlisted provider from 1 to 5 against the criteria that matter to you:

  1. Registration: BAS Agent or tax agent, checked on the Tax Practitioners Board register
  2. Scope: bookkeeping, payroll, BAS, reporting, and anything you need beyond that
  3. Software: experience in your accounting system and add-ons
  4. Industry fit: experience with businesses like yours, including your award if you have staff
  5. Capacity: whether they are taking new clients and can handle your volume
  6. Cover: what happens when your bookkeeper is away
  7. Reporting: what you receive each month, and when
  8. Pricing model: fixed, hourly or packaged, and how extra work is charged
  9. Contract terms: notice period, lock-in and handover on exit

Weight the criteria before you score, so a cheaper quote doesn't outweigh a gap in registration or capacity.

‍

Questions to Ask Before You Sign

  • Are you a registered BAS agent or tax agent? What is your registration number?
  • Who will do my work, and who reviews it?
  • Which awards do you have payroll experience with?
  • How often will you reconcile the bank accounts?
  • What reports will I get each month, and by which day?
  • How do you handle questions from my staff or suppliers?
  • What is included in the fee, and how is extra work charged?
  • What notice do I need to give to leave, and how do you hand over the file?
  • Do you hold professional indemnity insurance?
  • Can I speak to two current clients of a similar size?

‍

Red Flags

  • No registration number when asked
  • Vague scope, or no written engagement letter
  • Monthly reports that arrive weeks late or not at all
  • Payroll questions answered with "the software works it out"
  • Reluctance to give you full admin access to your own accounting file

‍

FAQ

Do I need a local Adelaide bookkeeper?

Not necessarily. Cloud software means many providers work remotely. A local provider helps if you want on-site visits.

Can an Adelaide bookkeeper lodge my BAS?

Only if they are a registered BAS agent or tax agent. You can check the Tax Practitioners Board public register.

What software do Adelaide bookkeepers use?

Most of the providers in this guide work in Xero, and several also support MYOB and QuickBooks Online.

When should I switch bookkeepers?

When reports are late or wrong, BAS lodgements slip, payroll errors repeat or your business has outgrown the provider's capacity.

Are all of these providers taking new clients?

Not all. As at 11 October 2026, Integral Bookkeeping Solutions and Bookkeepers On Call both said on their websites that they were not taking new clients for the rest of 2026. Check with each provider directly.

Can a bookkeeper lodge my income tax return?

Only a registered tax agent can lodge income tax returns for a fee. A BAS agent can lodge BAS and IAS but not income tax returns.
