Credit Controller vs Outsourced Accounts Receivable Costs

A mid-range credit controller in Sydney earns a base salary of $81,750, and that is before super, leave and the time it takes to find one. If late-paying customers are squeezing your cash, the real question is whether a full-time hire is the cheapest way to get paid faster, or whether accounts receivable can sit inside an outsourced finance team you already need.

‍

What is a credit controller?

A credit controller makes sure customers pay on time. The role sets credit terms for new customers, sends invoices and statements, chases overdue accounts, agrees payment plans and escalates bad debts. In a smaller business, the same person often reconciles customer receipts in Xero and reports debtor days to the owner each month.

Outsourced accounts receivable covers the same work, done by a finance team that also handles your bookkeeping, payables and reporting. The difference is how you pay for it: a salary for one person, or a monthly fee for a team.

‍

What a credit controller costs to employ in 2026-27

Robert Half's 2026 data puts a Sydney credit controller at $70,850 at the 25th percentile, $81,750 at the median and $92,650 at the 75th percentile. These are base salaries, so super and other on-costs sit on top.

Here is the full cost of a median hire, using figures you can check:

  • Base salary: $81,750
  • Super guarantee at 12% of qualifying earnings: $9,810. The ATO confirms the rate is 12% and, since 1 July 2026, super must reach the fund within 7 business days of each payday.
  • Salary plus super: $91,560 a year, or about $7,630 a month.

That figure still leaves out several costs. Workers compensation premiums, payroll tax if your wages exceed your state's threshold, software licences, a laptop, recruitment fees and the hours you spend managing the role all add to it. Run your own numbers through our employee cost calculator to see the total for your business.

There is also cover to think about. Under the National Employment Standards, a full-time employee gets 4 weeks of paid annual leave and 10 days of paid personal leave each year. When your only credit controller is away, collections usually stop.

What outsourced accounts receivable costs

Scale Suite does not sell accounts receivable on its own. It sits inside a monthly finance package alongside bookkeeping, payables, payroll and BAS. Packages start from $1,500 per month, and most clients invest $2,500 to $6,000 per month for a complete finance function. The price depends on how many invoices you raise, how many customers you chase and how many entities you run.

The comparison that matters is not $7,630 against $1,500. It is $7,630 for one task against a single monthly fee that covers the credit control work plus the rest of your finance function. See our pricing page for a fixed-fee quote based on your volumes.

‍

What the outsourced version includes

A well-run accounts receivable process covers the same ground a good credit controller would:

  • Invoices raised on time, with the right terms and purchase order numbers
  • Statements sent monthly and reminder emails on a set schedule
  • Phone and email follow-up on accounts past due
  • Receipts matched in Xero daily, so the aged receivables report is correct
  • Payment plans recorded and tracked
  • A monthly debtor report showing debtor days, the top overdue accounts and what is being done about each

If you want to tighten your reminder emails first, our free payment reminder email drafter gives you a starting sequence. Our guide to automated invoice reminders covers how to set them up in Xero.

‍

What faster collection is worth

The salary is only half of the decision. The other half is how much cash is tied up in unpaid invoices.

Take a hypothetical services business that bills $6 million a year. That is about $16,438 of revenue per day. If debtor days fall from 60 to 45, the business collects 15 days of revenue sooner:

$16,438 x 15 days = $246,570 of cash released.

That is cash that can pay suppliers, fund payroll or replace an overdraft. Check where your business sits against our debtor days benchmarks by industry, and read the real cost of 30-day payment terms for how terms drive the number.

‍

When to hire a credit controller

A full-time credit controller makes sense when collections fill a full working week on their own. That usually means hundreds of customer accounts, high-value disputes that need constant phone contact, or customer portals and contract terms that need someone checking them every day. At that volume, one person focused on cash can pay for themselves.

‍

When outsourcing is the better fit

Outsourcing usually wins when credit control is a part-time job sitting on top of a bookkeeper's or office manager's workload. It also wins when you need someone to own the whole order-to-cash process, not just the chasing, and when you cannot afford collections to stop during leave or after a resignation.

The hire vs outsource calculator puts both options side by side with your own salary and volume figures.

‍

A simple decision test

Ask three questions:

  1. Would collections alone keep one person busy for 38 hours a week?
  2. Do you also need bookkeeping, payables and reporting done to the same standard?
  3. What happens to your cash when the person doing collections is on leave?

If the answer to the first is no and the second is yes, outsourcing will almost always cost less per hour of useful work.

FAQ

How much does a credit controller earn in Sydney?

Robert Half's 2026 data shows a Sydney credit controller earning a base salary between $70,850 and $92,650, with a median of $81,750. Super at 12% sits on top.

What is the full cost of employing a credit controller?

At the median salary, base pay plus 12% super comes to about $91,560 a year. Workers compensation, payroll tax where it applies, software, equipment, recruitment and management time add to that.

Can I outsource just my accounts receivable?

Some providers sell collections on their own. Scale Suite includes accounts receivable within a monthly finance package, so the same team that raises invoices also reconciles receipts and reports debtor days.

What are good debtor days for a small business?

It depends on your industry and payment terms. A business on 30-day terms with debtor days well above 45 has room to improve. Our debtor days benchmarks by industry give a closer comparison.

Is a credit controller the same as an accounts receivable officer?

The roles overlap. An accounts receivable officer usually focuses on invoicing and matching receipts, while a credit controller focuses on credit terms, collections and disputes. Smaller businesses often combine both.

Will outsourcing credit control upset my customers?

Not if it is done well. Reminders go out from your own email address and Xero account, in your tone, and sensitive accounts can be escalated to you before any firm call is made.

When should a business hire its first credit controller?

When collections work fills a full-time role on its own, usually because of high customer numbers or complex contract and portal requirements. Before that point, it tends to be a part of a broader finance role.
